The Philadelphia 76ers sit atop a mountain of cap space heading into free agency and the franchise seems to be aiming at building a team around the core of Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey that can compete for a ring in the near future.
The 76ers have been linked with high-profile names like Paul George, Jimmy Butler, LeBron James and a few others in recent weeks.
Signing players of that level is always difficult though, even if you have the necessary cap space to pull it off. Butler and LeBron look set to stay where they are, while the Golden State Warriors are starting to look like serious contenders for George's signature if he was to leave Los Angeles.
So, the 76ers must have alternative plans in place in case they fail to land their top targets like George.
On the other hand, a lot of focus has to be on building the roster and finding the right role players, not just chasing a superstar.
The 76ers have been told to avoid signing two players in free agency. Matty Breisch named DeMar DeRozan and Andre Drummond in the article '2 players 76ers must avoid signing in 2024 NBA free agency' on Clutch Points.
The former leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to his 3-point shooting. Regarding DeRozan, Breisch wrote: "Yeah, you guessed it, Player X is DeMar DeRozan, and while he does have his fans, he's simply too unusual to be the Sixers' big free agent get unless, of course, he's willing to sign some crazy cheap contract the likes of which Daryl Morey simply can't refuse."
On the other hand, when it comes to Drummond, who has already played for the 76ers in the past, Breisch wrote: "If the Sixers trade Reed for, well, anything but another center, then yeah, bring in Drummond, give him his 12 minutes a game, and allow him to start when Embiid needs a break, but if Reed is a lock to make the roster there simply might not be enough of a role for either side to agree on a deal, especially if the Sixers have to use an exception to get a deal done. If it comes down to signing Oubre on the MLE or bringing back Drummond at the same number, the former has to take priority."
One cannot forget that the 76ers selected Adem Bona out of UCLA in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft and there is plenty of excitement around his potential.
All things considered, both DeRozan and Drummond could be assets to plenty of teams around the league. They might not be the right fit for the 76ers at this point though.
