Should Chiefs Re-Sign Creed Humphrey & Trey Smith In 'Final Moves?'
While the Kansas City Chiefs are trying to enjoy their final few weeks of the offseason, there is still work to be done before they kick off training camp on July 21.
ESPN's Aaron Schatz gave his suggestion as to what the defending back-to-back Super Bowl champion Chiefs should do in his recent article, where he proposed "final moves" for all 32 teams. As for the Chiefs' "final moves," Schatz says they should re-sign both starting center Creed Humphrey and right guard Trey Smith to extensions.

"The Chiefs might have the best interior offensive line in the league now that Jason Kelce has retired, but both Humphrey and Smith see their contracts end after the 2024 season," Schatz writes. "Kansas City needs to lock down its offensive line for the next few years and keep Humphrey and Smith through their primes."
Although expensive, locking down the offensive line, especially one with a championship pedigree, would be a wise move for the Chiefs. Obviously, with today's market, it is unlikely that the Chiefs can sign all five of their starting offensive linemen to long-term extensions. However, retaining its core could prove just as valuable.
Humphrey and Smith certainly qualify as its core, considering any questions regarding the Chiefs' offensive line lie on the outside at offensive tackle. The interior duo are entering their fourth year in the league, as they were a part of the 2021 NFL Draft class.
However, their stories aren't the same. Humphrey, the former second-round pick, was highly regarded coming out of Oklahoma, having been a two-time Big-12 Offensive Lineman of the Year award winner. So far, the Sooner product has seemingly lived up to expectations, anchoring the middle of the Chiefs' offensive line as their center.
Meanwhile, Smith is a former sixth-round pick out of Tennessee who has become a reliable starter. The 25-year-old was just one of three players to play over 4,000 snaps for the Chiefs last season, matched only by Patrick Mahomes and Humphrey, and gave up just two sacks while doing it.
Given their age and talents, signing both Humphrey and Smith should be a no-brainer for the Chiefs, as they'd join a list of core players that have done so. Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Chris Jones are all under contract for the foreseeable future, and while Humphrey and Smith may not be the faces of the franchise like those three, they still play their role.
