Phillies Superstar Leads National League All-Star Voting After First Ballot Update
When a Major League Baseball team has an excellent first half of the season, their fan base often shows out at the All-Star ballot box. In 2024, Philadelphia Phillies fans have been getting to the polls early and often.
MLB released its first round of All-Star voting updates Monday afternoon and the Phillies were flush with representation.
Alec Bohm leads at third base. J.T. Realmuto and Trea Turner are second at catcher and shortstop despite injuries shortening their seasons. And the Phils’ brightest star got the biggest bump from voters.
First baseman Bryce Harper received 1,110,562 votes since ballots opened on June 5. It’s the largest vote total in the National League and trails only the New York Yankees’ Juan Soto in all of MLB.
Harper is having a sensational season in his first go-around as a full-time first baseman. He ranks in the top 10 in MLB in on-base percentage, slugging percentage, walks, and OPS. He is also 11th in WRC+ at a whopping 152.
Freddie Freeman, Harper’s main competition for the first base spot both in the voting and on the stat sheet, checked in at 713,858 votes. He is 11th in the league in OPS at .903, only six points behind Harper in 10th.
The top vote-getter in each league at the end of Phase 1, which ends on June 27, automatically earns a starting spot in their All-Star team’s lineup. There were three other National League players with over 1 million votes: Bohm and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani.
