cyber attack not the cause of it issues - council

Problems with the council's IT systems were first noticed on Tuesday morning

A cyber attack was not the reason behind disruption to a council's computer systems, the authority said.

The acting chief executive of Birmingham City Council, Graeme Betts, said the fault was instead "due to some changes made last week".

Speaking at a cabinet meeting, which was delayed for 30 minutes due to wi-fi problems, he said the council was working to solve the issue.

It was first noticed on Tuesday morning and affected internet access and some email users.

The disruption prompted the council to post a warning on social media which said it was "experiencing intermittent problems with some of our online services".

Mr Betts told the meeting: “I’ve been asked the question and I can confirm this is not a cyber attack – it is down to the work we did last week.

“We know what’s caused the problem, we know what the issue is and we’re resolving it.

“We will get this rectified as quickly as possible.”
