The latest instalment in the 'Bad Boys' franchise, 'Bad Boys: Ride or Die', is proving to be a major hit at the box office.
In its second weekend, the film grossed $33 million, a modest 42% drop from its opening weekend. In just 12 days, it has amassed over $112 million domestically and $214 million globally. The impressive collections have propelled the four-film series past the $1 billion mark in total box office earnings.
The unexpected success of 'Bad Boys: Ride or Die' last weekend marked a turning point for the lagging summer movie season. Traditionally, the summer season—which runs from the first weekend in May through Labor Day—accounts for about 40% of the annual box office revenue. Although ticket sales are still down 28% for the summer, the performance of 'Bad Boys' indicated a promising shift in the right direction, suggesting an upward boost for newer releases including 'Inside Out 2' and the upcoming 'Deadpool And Wolverine'.
'Bad Boys: Ride or Die' is the fourth entry in the franchise directed by Michael Bay, which began with 1995. Despite initial critical derision, Bay returned to direct the 2003 sequel, 'Bad Boys II', which also featured stars Martin Lawrence and Will Smith reprising their roles as Detective Sergeant Marcus Miles Burnett and Detective Sergeant Michael Eugene "Mike" Lowrey.
The third film, 'Bad Boys for Life', released in 2020, was directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah and received widespread critical acclaim, a trend that has continued with 'Bad Boys: Ride or Die'.
Leading man Will Smith celebrated the franchise's milestone on Instagram, posting, "WOW! Thank You All. Bad Boys franchise total box office just clicked over $1B TODAY."
Smith also marked the 30th anniversary of the beginning of production on the original 'Bad Boys', reminiscing, "Damn! I was 25 years old. Marty Mar was 29. Just two kids—who lucked out and got to live their dreams on the first try."
This year, 'Dune' entered the 1 billion club with its sequel going on to record one of the highest collections at the box office. 'Godzilla X Kong' also took the monsterverse franchise into the coveted club. Meanwhile, the box office performance of 'Kung Fu Panda 4' helped the franchise gross over $2 billion overall, making it the seventh highest-grossing animated film franchise.
