Bryson DeChambeau edges Rory McIlroy by one stroke to win US Open
NEW DELHI: Bryson DeChambeau emerged victorious at the US Open on Sunday, securing his second title by a single stroke over Rory McIlroy after an intense battle on the back nine at Pinehurst.
DeChambeau, aged 30, who previously triumphed at the 2020 US Open, carded a one-over-par 71 to end the tournament at six-under-par 274. McIlroy, despite his valiant effort, finished one shot behind at 275 after posting a 69 in the final round.
The Northern Irishman, aiming to break a decade-long major championship drought, held a two-stroke advantage with just five holes remaining. However, he stumbled down the stretch, making costly bogeys on three of the last four holes, ultimately handing the trophy to DeChambeau.
McIlroy's collapse was reminiscent of Greg Norman's infamous final-round defeat to Nick Faldo at Pinehurst in 1996. The four-time major winner faced immense pressure on the greens, missing crucial par putts from 2.5 feet at the par-3 17th and just inside four feet at the par-4 18th, resulting in bogeys that left him one shot short of DeChambeau.
Despite finding trouble off the tee at the 18th, DeChambeau managed to blast his third shot to within four feet of the hole. He then confidently sank the pressure-packed putt to secure the victory. As he raised his arms in triumph, DeChambeau let out a scream of joy and paid homage to the late Payne Stewart, the 1999 US Open champion at Pinehurst who tragically passed away just months after his victory.
"That's Payne right there, baby," DeChambeau said into a television camera, pointing to a pin of Stewart on his cap.
