The 2024 Continental Gold Tour continues with the Paavo Nurmi Games, to be held at the Paavo Nurmi Stadium, Turku, Finland. The track & field event will see Neeraj Chopra in the Men’s Javelin Throw category.
Chopra, the reigning Olympics and World Champion, will face competition from Max Dehning of Germany, the youngest member of the coveted 90m club and also the season leader.
Apart from him, other key contenders include Anderson Peters of Grenada, Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago, and Oliver Helander of Finland.
Chopra returns to Turku, where he had finished runner-up in 2022 with a throw of 89.30m. Helander had triumphed in that edition.
This will be Chopra's first competition since the National Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar. The 26-year-old had withdrawn from last month's Ostrava Golden Spike as a precautionary measure after he "felt something in my adductor (group of muscles located on inner thighs)".
Chopra, looking to reclaim golden success at the Paris Olympics, began his season at the Doha Diamond League in May, where he finished second with a throw of 88.36m.
At the Federation Cup, Neeraj had secured the gold medal with an underwhelming effort of 82.27m.
After the Paavo Nurmi Games, Chopra will next be seen in action at the Paris Diamond League on July 7.
He has opted out of the National Inter-State Athletics in Panchkula to avoid a hectic schedule ahead of the Olympics.
"Further competition schedule will be decided later according to situation and my body. Otherwise, I will go to Paris from there (after competing in Turku)," Chopra had stated after the Federation Cup.
