A hospital in Lucknow has become the district’s first to surgically treat Trigeminal Neuralgia – a chronic pain disorder that affects your nerves. According to news reports, the Balram Hospital successfully treated 46-year-old Ashok Kumar, who was suffering from suicide disease as many patients developed self-harming tendencies.
Doctors say Bollywood actor Salman Khan also had Trigeminal Neuralgia which affects about 10-12 out of 100,000 people and is more frequently found in women. Khan was diagnosed with a neuropathic disorder in 2007.
According to doctors, Ashok had been experiencing severe pain on the right side of his face for the last six years, and despite using painkillers and undergoing treatments, he found no relief. Later, he visited the hospital where detailed tests were conducted to diagnose him with the disease, characterized by brief, electric shock-like pains that can feel like a stabbing sensation or a "lightning bolt" on the face. The pain can occur multiple times throughout the day and is almost always unilateral, affecting one or more divisions of the trigeminal nerve.

Even simple activities like brushing your teeth, eating, drinking, or talking can trigger painful episodes. “I told him if it is not cured by medicines, then surgery is the only solution,” said Dr. Tiwari, who conducted Ashok’s surgery.
Dr. Tiwari said Ashok’s MRI scan revealed that an artery was compressing the fifth nerve on the right side of his brain, causing unbearable pain. “Along with my team I decided to perform the surgery to remove the tumour and decompress the nerve,” Dr. Tiwari explained.
