‘Inside Out 2’ weekend box office: Maya Hawke starrer film earns $155 million, biggest opening since ‘Barbie’
Amy Poehler’s character Joy is what everyone at Pixar is feeling right now since the animated film has grossed a whopping weekend debut of $155 million domestically. Pixar’s parent company Disney has kicked out the emotion of Sadness with the biggest opening since Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie.’
The Maya Hawke starring animated sequel has delivered a historic opening weekend collection and the biggest of the year surpassing ‘Dune: Part Two' ($82.5 million) and 'Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ ($80 million). It is also the first movie to earn more than $100 million since July 2023 with the opening of Margot Robbie starrer ‘Barbie’ which earned $162 million.
The sequel of the 2015 family comedy ‘Inside Out’ was projected to earn $80 million to $90 million.
The achievements of Ayo Edebiri starrer ‘Inside Out 2’ don’t end here. The film has also made history as the biggest overseas animated opening of all time. Connected with the international box office, ‘Inside Out 2’ collected $140 million overtaking ‘Frozen 2’which earned $135 million.

The huge opening for ‘Inside Out 2’ is a big win for movie theatres who have been seeing slow gains from films this past year. George Miller directed ‘Furiosa’ has been seeing a slow rise and hasn’t yet earned enough to reach the budget of the film which was $168 million.
“With the phenomenal opening of ‘Inside Out 2’ — which exceeded some projections by nearly 50% — and big advance tracking on a number of forthcoming releases, the post-strike comeback is officially on,” said Imax CEO Rich Gelfond.
Critics and audiences are feeling a pandora’s box of emotions (mostly joy) at the sequel which released after nearly a decade of the original film. The film is enjoying a 92% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” CinemaScore.
