New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni clicked a selfie on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Italy. Notably, Italy extended invitations to leaders from 11 developing nations across Africa, South America, and the Indo-Pacific region to participate in the G7 Summit.

The G7 summit took place in Italy's Apulia region, where India was invited as an 'Outreach Country' by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The summit included participation from the seven-member nations—the US, UK, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, and France—along with the European Union.

During a bilateral meeting, PM Modi and Giorgia Meloni discussed defence and security cooperation between their countries. “They welcomed the forthcoming visit of the Italian aircraft carrier ITS Cavour and training ship ITS Vespucci to India later this year," the Ministry of External Affairs said in an official release.

The official release further stated that the leaders agreed to fulfil their shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific and also discussed the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). “Both leaders look forward to joint activities to be implemented under the Indo-Pacific Ocean Initiative framework to fulfil their shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific," the Ministry of External Affairs said.

Prime Minister Modi also thanked the Italian government for recognising the Indian Army's contribution to the Italian campaign during World War II. He also announced that India will be upgrading the Yashwant Ghadge Memorial in Italy’s Montone.

Earlier last year, the two global leaders had clicked a selfie on the sidelines of the COP28 climate summit in Dubai. Meloni had posted the selfie with PM Modi, along with the caption "good friends at COP28" with the hashtag "Melodi".
