Mitchell Evans Named No. 2 Tight End In College Football

Notre Dame has a very long history of producing big time tight ends, and that will continue in 2024 thanks to the return of senior Mitchell Evans. The Ohio native is getting plenty of preseason love after an outstanding 2023 campaign.
Lindy's Sports named Evans to its preseason All-America squad, placing him on the second team. Lindy's Sports also ranked him as the No. 2 returning tight end in the country in its preseason College Football National 2024 Preview magazine.
Evans was a breakout player for Notre Dame last season, finishing the season with 29 catches for 422 yards and one touchdown. An early season injury kept him out of the win over Central Michigan, and a knee injury caused him to miss the final four games of the season. When Evans went down he ranked in top five nationally among tight ends. Evans was on pace to rack up 44 catches for 633 yards before the injury.
Primarily a rotation player in his first two seasons, Evans established himself as an impact caliber pass catcher last season. Things started a bit slow for Evans, who had just five catches in the first four games, which included him missing the CMU contest. Evans had his breakout in the loss to Ohio State. It wasn't just his 7 catches for 75 yards, it was also his impressive ability to get open and his big time ball skills. A week later, Evans hauled in 6 passes for 134 yards in the win over Duke.
Evans is expected to be back to full strength for the 2024 season, and expectations are that he'll pick up where he left off. New starting quarterback Riley Leonard will likely look at Evans quite a bit early on as the rest of the receiving corps sorts itself out. Evans should once again be one of the best pass catching tight ends in college football.
