'We're Not Going To Address It': Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving Continues to Dodge Questions About Mitch Marner's Future
The first day of NHL free agency also represented the first opportunity for Mitch Marner to sign a contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
That didn't happen and Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving continued to sidestep any questions surrounding the star's future with the club.
"No update on Mitch, Treliving said. "As I've said, I'm not going to do play-by-play. Mitch is a great player. We're lucky to have him."
Marner has been the subject of much speculation since the Maple Leafs were eliminated in the first round of the 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs at the hands of the Boston Bruins. Now into the final year of his contract, Marner can either;
A) play out his remaining contract or leave the club following the 2024-25 season.
B) play out the contract and sign a new contract with the Maple Leafs.
or C) agree to a trade if the Leafs present him with one.
Over the weekend in Las Vegas, newly installed head coach Craig Berube said he was looking forward to coaching Marner next season and Treliving referred to those comments in his no-answer about the star player.
"I know there's lots going on, lots of noise around it. But we're focused on free agency. "Craig alluded in his last press availability that he's excited to coach him. And, you know, we move forward.
"But we're not going to address it. There's nothing to update there. Mitch is training, preparing, and getting ready for the season."
Marner carries a salary cap hit of $10.903 million for 2024-25 and will likely want some sort of raise beyond this season. Any trade would require Marner's consent as he has a full no-move clause in his existing contract.
