Family of Aboriginal woman shot dead by police in Geraldton speak ahead of coronial inquest
Almost five years ago, a gunshot rang out on this suburban street. It was late on a Tuesday afternoon. Neighbours were chatting over the fence when a woman holding a knife and a pair of scissors walked into view. A member of the public called 000, drawing the response of four police cars. Constable Brent Mitchell Windham was one of those officers, and 16 seconds after getting out of his vehicle, he fatally shot 29 year old JC. The incident sparked protest marchers in Geraldton and rallies in Perth. Constable Windham was charged with murder, believed to be the first on duty police officer to face such a charge in WA in almost 100 years. He was acquitted by a Supreme Court jury of both murder and the lesser charge of manslaughter in 2021. And this kid got my mother. Jayce. Foster mother remains unable to accept that verdict, saying the murder trial of Brent Windham produced nothing but unanswered questions for her family and her last hope for answers and accountability from the WA Police Force and the state government. Is in the hands of the State Coroner. The inquest is set down for two weeks.
