Ukrainian Security Service Thwarts Plot to Incite Riots in Kyiv

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has detained a group of individuals who were planning to incite public unrest.

According to Lenta the coup was planned to take place in Kyiv following Constitution Day on June 30. According to the Ukrainian agency, the special services successfully prevented an attempted coup.

The group was led by a co-founder of a public organization known for its anti-Ukrainian actions since 2015.

They planned to announce the removal of the current military-political leadership of Ukraine under the guise of holding a so-called "veche" (public assembly).

The conspirators intended to capture the building of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and disrupt its operations.

They aimed to attract participants by staging a seemingly peaceful gathering in central Kyiv, deceiving most attendees about the true nature of the event.

The SBU reported that the group planned to spread information about the "riots" through domestic and foreign media outlets to destabilize the socio-political situation in Ukraine.

During searches related to the case, weapons, ammunition, various equipment, and drafts with evidence of the criminal activities were found.

The detained individuals face charges under multiple sections of Article 109 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which pertains to actions aimed at forcibly changing or overthrowing the constitutional order or seizing state power.

They could face up to 10 years in prison with confiscation of property.
