Ruiz: 2024 Cardinals remind me a lot of 2022 Rams heading into season 'The Insiders'
You're 2 completely different expectations. What's the biggest question on that Cardinals team? Well, I want to see how this defense, which was so young in 2023, matures. And Jonathan Gannon's second year, you talked about how energetic they played and how hard that they played. And they were noted for that, credited for that. But they also played so young. More defensive snaps taken by rookies from the Cardinals than any other team in the NFL last year. Guys like Garrett Williams and BJ Ogilari expected to have significant roles this season. You also have to remember that this Cardinals team. Was third to the last in the NFL in sacks. So you have a guy like Saban Collins who did not get his fifth year option picked up coming into year four trying to build off those 5 1/2 sacks. Buddha Baker, can he regain his star status? So those are all questions for this Cardinals defense. Reminds me a lot Baldy of the Rams in 2022 who are rebuilding after the Super Bowl season. They had injuries. They had a lot of young guys play. And then in 23 they matured and they all came together and they became a playoff defense. So I'm curious to see. If the Cardinals can do the same thing and really elevate here one season after playing so many young players. You know, Omar, when you talk about young players, it also is the defensive coordinator who is the youngest in the league of Nick Raylis. He's a good friend of mine. He got the job when he was 28 years old, but he's qualified. And so, you know, you talk about, you know, Garrett Williams last year and BJ Ogilvy, they were drafted at the top of the draft this last year. This year, Darius Robinson comes in from Missouri, Max Melton, the second round pick out of Rutgers. I mean, they're building this thing kind of piece by piece from the inside. Remember, you know, Kazir White came in with Jonathan Gannon from Philadelphia. He played great, really great until he got hurt. One thing. Omar that I would challenge anybody because like Tom just said, a lot of people didn't watch these Cardinals team play. They play hard. They, I mean, the Eagles found that out. You know, the Steelers found that out last year. The Cowboys found that out. The Ravens found it out. This team played for Nick. It played for Jonathan again. Now let's just start adding some talent to it because I feel like the effort is there to kind of turn this thing around.
