John Terry rips into BBC for 'disgraceful' Cristiano Ronaldo coverage

Ex-England captain John Terry labelled the BBC's coverage of Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty miss against Slovenia a "disgrace".

Ronaldo, 39, saw a spot-kick saved by Slovenia keeper Jan Oblak during extra-time of the Euro 2024 round of 16 clash between their two national sides. The emotion of the moment saw the veteran reduced to tears, though he regained his composure before going on to convert in a victorious shootout.

During their analysis of Oblak's save, the BBC carried the caption 'Misstiano Penaldo'. This was poorly received by Terry, who simply wrote "BBC this is a disgrace" on an Instagram story.

Terry knows what it's like to miss a penalty in a high-profile game, having done so in the 2008 Champions League final. Ronaldo missed in that same shoot-out for Manchester United against Terry's Chelsea, though it was United who ultimately came out on top.

“I could have given the national team the advantage, but I didn’t manage it, Oblak saved," Ronaldo said after the game. "I didn’t miss once during the year, when I needed it most Oblak saved.

"It’s a feeling of sadness and joy at the same time, but the most important thing is the progress, the team deserved it. Slovenia spent almost the entire time defending, the team deserves congratulations, especially our goalkeeper who made three good saves [in the shootout.‌

“Even the strongest people have their days, I was down and I was sad because the team needed me... I can't do it, I'll talk later, I'll talk later.”

Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa ended up being Portugal's hero. While Oblak saved one penalty during extra-time, Costa kept out three in the shoot-out to deny Josip Ilicic, Jure Balkovec and Benjamin Verbic.

"This is probably the best game of my life," Costa said, as reported by The BBC "I am focused on doing what I had to do. I went with my gut feeling.

"Of course, we had analysed the penalty takers, but players change and they change how they shoot. I am very happy and very excited to have helped the team."

Portugal will go on to face France in the quarter-finals, in a repeat of the 2016 final. It will be an opportunity for Ronaldo to make amends on a personal level, having limped out of that game before watching his team claim glory through substitute Eder.

France, who finished second in their group behind Austria, were made to work hard for victory against Belgium earlier on Monday. With less than five minutes of regulation time remaining, Randal Kolo Muani's scuffed shot deflected in off Jan Vertonghen to give Les Bleus victory.
