Springboks son signs for NZ side, eligible for All Blacks

The son of a Springboks player has chosen the All Blacks and New Zealand over South Africa. Talk about irony.

SA-born 20-year-old scrumhalf, Jordi Viljoen has just signed a two-year deal with the Hurricanes.

Ironically, his father, Joggie Viljoen is a former Springbok. Now, his son is eligible to play for the All Blacks.

SA-BORN STAR CHOOSES ALL BLACKS OVER SPRINGBOKS

Viljoen (Jordi) was born in Pretoria. However, the talented scrum half has chosen to pursue playing for the All Blacks over the Springboks.

Despite, having Bok blood in his veins he has decided to live and play in NZ. Viljoen has just signed his first full-time contract with the Hurricanes.

“It’s a massive blessing for me to sign with the Hurricanes, it’s been an amazing season on and off the field. To be able to follow in my dad’s footsteps and pave my own path has been an absolute privilege,”

“Coming through the Hurricanes pathway, this has always been a goal of mine, so to be able to commit for the next two seasons is awesome,” Viljoen stated on RugbyPass.

BIG BOOTS TO FILL FOR VILJOEN

Viljoen has some big boots to fill. Firstly, All Blacks legend TJ Perenara, at the Hurricanes. As well as his father who represented the Springboks.

“Viljoen’s father Joggie played for the Hurricanes during the Super Rugby season in 2000. Four years earlier, the Port Elizabeth-born talent had played three matches on a Springboks tour but none of them were Tests,” the same publication stated.

Now, Viljoen (Jordie) is a fully-fledged Hurricanes player. Imagine a father-son duo playing for the Springboks (father) and All Blacks (son). This is now a very possible reality in the future.

Therefore, he is now in contention for the All Blacks having recently represented the U20 All Blacks last season. Furthermore, he started the Hurricanes first four SuperRugby Pacific games this season against the Western Force, Reds, Moana Pasifika and the Highlanders.
