Lanka registers protest with India for death of navy sailor
NEW DELHI: Sri Lanka has registered a protest with India for the death of a navy sailor who was killed while attempting to seize an Indian vessel allegedly poaching in Lankan waters. The sailor sustained critical injuries due to "the aggressive manoeuvres of the Indian trawler, resisting its seizure".
Daily Mirror reported on Saturday that the Lankan foreign ministry summoned a junior official from the Indian high commission and expressed concerns about the incident. Sri Lankahas arrested and booked 10 Indian fishermen for causing the death of the sailor.
Asked about the action against Indian fishermen, ministry of external affairs had said last week it's already raised the issue with Lankan authorities. "On these 10 fishermen, our high commission is aware of the matter. We are aware of the matter and we have taken up this issue with the Sri Lankan side. Hopefully, we will see how best to take it forward," said the MEA spokesperson.
"In Colombo, the foreign ministry summoned a diplomat from the Indian high commission to convey the Sri Lankan govt's concerns about the incident. The ministry's South Asia Director General Niluka Kadurugamuwa conveyed the govt's concerns and also reiterated Sri Lanka's opposition through a formal note to continuing IUU fishing, especially bottom trawling and indiscriminate poaching by Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan waters," said a report in Lanka's Sunday Times.
There was no confirmation by the Indian side about the summoning.
