How to disable Google Chrome extensions: A step-by-step guide

Google Chrome extensions can enhance your browsing experience by adding new features and functionalities. However, there might be times when you need to disable certain extensions to improve browser performance, troubleshoot issues, or maintain privacy.

According to a study conducted by Stanford University, more than 280 million Google Chrome users between July 2020 and February 2023 downloaded Chrome extensions that were infected with malware. The study also claimed that millions of Google Chrome users are reportedly using compromised browsers which are infected with these malware-laden extensions.

Whether you're dealing with too many active extensions or suspecting one of them is causing problems, knowing how to manage and disable these add-ons is essential. In this guide, we'll walk you through the steps to disable Google Chrome extensions quickly and efficiently, helping you keep your browser running smoothly and securely. Follow these simple instructions to take control of your Chrome extensions.

How to disable extensions on Google Chrome

  • Manage your extensions
  • On your computer, open Chrome.
  • At the top right, select More,
  • Select the Extensions option
  • Click on Manage extensions.
  • Here you can turn extensions on/off

Google Chrome extensions: Other options to manage

Apart from this, users can make other changes to Google Chrome extensions. This includes

“Allow incognito”. On the extension, select Details. Turn on Allow in incognito. Users can also fix the corruption of the extensions. Find a corrupted extension and select Repair. Confirm by selecting Repair extension.

Google Chrome users can also Allow site access to the extension. On the extension, select Details. Next select “Allow this extension to read and change all your data on websites you visit,” and change the extension’s site access to On click, On specific sites, or all sites.

Some extensions need permission to read and change site data. However, Google allows Chrome users to change their extensions’ permissions anytime.

However, it's important to note that when users grant or cancel these permissions, it will only affect extension sites that match the extension's host permissions. Extensions that change lower-level network access through VPNs or proxy settings aren’t affected by the change in permissions.
