The New York Yankees fell behind early in their 9-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday.
Here’s how the Yankees fared in their most recent loss:
1. Carlos Rodón had a terrible two innings but then rebounded.
Rodón allowed the first four Blue Jays batters to reach base before giving up a three-run home run to George Springer. That put the Yankees behind 5-0 after the first inning. Rodón fell into a similar situation in the second inning. The first two runners reached base and Springer stepped up to the plate. The outfielder hit his second homer of the night to put the Blue Jays up 8-0. Rodón recorded five straight outs and, he made it through the fifth inning without allowing any more runs. The lefty had his second-straight poor start but was able to rebound enough to eat some innings for the Yankees.
2. The Yankees bullpen stepped up.
Phil Bickford was the first Yankees reliever out of the bullpen on Thursday. He went 1.1 innings and his only blip was allowing a solo home run to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Jake Cousins entered the game in the seventh inning and pitched a perfect 1.2 innings. The fact that Aaron Boone only needed to call on two relievers in a seven-run loss has a larger impact. The Yankees went through four relievers Wednesday night against the Mets and just played the first of a four-game series. The rest of the Yankees bullpen should be available for the remainder of the weekend.
3. The Yankees’ slump reveals holes that need to be filled.
The Bronx Bombers were only able to score two runs on three hits Thursday. The team has now dropped ten of its past 13 games. The lack of offense has played a large role in the recent slump. The Yankees lost Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo due to injury and the lineup has looked thin over the past few days. The team will need to add to its lineup in one way or another in order to get back to its World Series aspirations.
