Australia’s new governor-general sworn in
Our country has a new Governor General, Samantha Milston, the second woman to be appointed to the role. We'll take you live to Canberra and our politics reporter Claudia. Claudia, good morning. It marks a new chapter. Good morning Davina. Samantha Molson has been sworn in as Australias 28th Governor General and this certainly does mark a new beginning. The prominent businesswoman will serve the highest office as the King's representative in Australia, saying her leadership will be modern and optimistic. She was greeted by Australia's Federation Guard who saluted her for the first time outside Parliament House this morning. Before being welcomed by the Prime Minister and Indigenous leaders who walked her into the Senate to take the oaths there, both members and senators of Parliament gathered. Anthony Albanese and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton there also in the crowd, former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and her family, of course, all wearing a golden wattle representing the national emblem. After sealing her approval with the signature and a handshake, she gave a speech acknowledging her family's presence. Although she has not served in the military, she is the daughter of an army officer who did for almost 40 years and he sat there proudly watching this important moment. Miss Moston spoke of a meeting with King Charles in which she passed on Australia's wishes for his and the Princess of Wales health. Now, with today's change of the guard comes contemporary challenges in Miss Mosten acknowledge that too, saying these global issues play strains on our country's confidence. Many Australians expressed concerns about the global political environment and the range of conflicts around the world at this time. They ask whether young Australians will enjoy the benefits of this country in the way that older generations have. There is concern for for rising lack of respect for women, of shrinking opportunities for some men and the need for respectful conversations to understand the place of men in our communities. Now we share the great fortune of living in a modern and optimistic nation. A nation made generous and courageous by our people. In Her Excellency Sam Austin, our nation has the right leader. The new Governor General replaces the Honourable David Hurley and though she paid tribute to his service, there has been some controversy around her pay rise. She'll receive $200,000 more than Mr. Hurley did, but he did receive a military pension and she will not. Now her family will move into Government House here in Cambridge. On this new chapter, as Australias 28th Governor General, she'll hold this position for the next five years. Davina, Claudia, thank you.
