HSBC down as bank app failure leaves thousands of customers unable to access accounts
Customers started reporting problems this morning
HSBC's online banking and app has gone down leaving thousands of customers unable to access their accounts.
According to the website DownDetector, more than 6,000 people are reporting issues with their HSBC accounts this morning. The site reported that 67% had issues with their mobile banking, and 20% with logging into their mobile account. HSBC's sister bank First Direct appears to not be affected by the outage.
The problems appear to have begun at around 8:20 this morning and the high street bank has confirmed that issues are still ongoing. It has not been confirmed what has caused the outage.
In an X - formerly Twitter - post, HSBC said: "We’re really sorry that some customers are having issues accessing personal online and mobile banking. Our IT teams are working hard to get these services back to normal. You can still authorise online card purchases via SMS."
HSBC has now confirmed that customers are now able to log into their online and mobile banking, following a disruption this morning. However, it was still working to resolve "additional issues" within the app including viewing recent transactions. The banking giant said customers sending payments online, by app or on the phone may see a slow response or see a "failure notice". Before resending any money, it advises customers to check with the recipient or view their recent transactions in the mobile app before sending again. HSBC told the Mirror that it would continue to keep its customer base updated through its social channels until the issue is resolved.
Many HSBC customers took the social media this morning to share their frustration. One customer said: "@HSBC_UK your app service is not working, it states service unavailable and multiple people have reported it." Another said: "Hi @HSBC_UK is the app working today? I can't access my accounts, says the service is unavailable! It's payday so I have bills to pay and I cannot log in!"
A third added: "The rage on Twitter because the HSBC app is down on payday. I’ll pay my bills in a couple of hours when it’s no doubt back up. People get so angry about the wrong things."
A fourth said: " I don’t typically complain about hsbc (big fat lie) but this is really doing my head in. For years i’ve debated moving banks and honestly this might be my final straw. the fact so many people have been screwed over by this bank countless times is embarrassing!"
Another customer said they would've headed to their high street banking branch but HSBC had shut it down. They said: "Would go to my high street bank but you closed that down and then closed down the nearest one to that". Another customer called for HSBC to compensate banking customers as it was becoming a "recurring issue" adding: "I think you should compensate every customer £100 for being an inconvenience on people’s payday. We all have bills to pay".
In an update to customers, HSBC said their teams were still "working on a fix" and once it had more information it would publish an update to its social media pages. The Mirror has contacted HSBC for comment.
