Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has shared his thoughts on the San Francisco 49ers' offense, suggesting it would be more effective if it focused on tight end George Kittle rather than running back Christian McCaffrey.
George Kittle is widely regarded as one of the best all-around tight ends in the NFL. His skills as both a pass-catcher and blocker make him a valuable asset for the 49ers. However, the team's offense primarily runs through Christian McCaffrey, the reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year. McCaffrey's versatility as both a runner and receiver makes him a reliable option for quarterback Brock Purdy, especially in critical situations.
Kelce, who has faced Kittle and the 49ers in two Super Bowls, believes that Kittle should have a more prominent role in the offense. He argues that the 49ers' offense is at its best when it revolves around Kittle. However, this perspective overlooks the unique contributions McCaffrey brings to the team. McCaffrey's ability to gain yards both on the ground and through the air, along with his knack for finding the end zone, makes him an indispensable part of the 49ers' game plan.
"I wish he would have had more opportunities to make plays though, I do wish that," Kelce said. "I think the [Kyle] Shanahan offense can get kind of tied up in, I mean it's Christian McCaffrey right now. It goes through him. They've got [expletive] talent all over the [expletive] field on the offensive side. I think that offense runs best when it's going through 85."
While Kittle is undoubtedly a key player, McCaffrey's impact on the field cannot be understated. His performance last season, which included 21 touchdowns and over 2,000 yards from scrimmage, underscores why the 49ers' offense is built around him. Kittle remains a significant threat, but McCaffrey's dynamic playmaking abilities make him the focal point of the 49ers' attack.
