New Delhi: In a significant development for India's defence capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has handed over the Medium Range-Microwave Obscurant Chaff Rocket (MR-MOCR) to the Indian Navy. The ceremonial handover took place in New Delhi, marking a notable advancement in radar countermeasure technology.
The Microwave Obscurant Chaff (MOC) technology, developed by DRDO's Defence Laboratory in Jodhpur, is designed to obscure radar signals, and create a microwave shield around naval platforms and assets. This innovation significantly reduces radar detection, enhancing the stealth capabilities of the Indian Navy.
The MR-MOCR utilizes special Fibers with diameters of just a few microns, which possess unique microwave obscuration properties. When the rocket is deployed, it forms a microwave obscurant cloud in space, covering a substantial area with adequate persistence time. This cloud effectively shields against hostile threats equipped with Radio Frequency seekers.
The technology has undergone rigorous testing. Phase-I trials demonstrated the successful blooming and persistence of the MOC cloud from Indian Navy ships. In Phase-II trials, the technology achieved a 90 percent reduction in the Radar Cross Section (RCS) of an aerial target, a milestone that has been cleared by the Indian Navy.
In a ceremony, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, Dr. Samir V. Kamat, handed over the MR-MOCR to Rear Admiral Brijesh Vashistha, Director General of Naval Armament Inspection, Indian Navy. The event saw accolades for the Defence Laboratory, Jodhpur team for their rapid and successful development of this strategically important technology.
Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh praised DRDO and the Indian Navy for this achievement, highlighting it as a step towards Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) in defence. The successful handover of MR-MOCR signifies a leap forward in India's indigenous defence capabilities and enhances the Indian Navy's operational readiness against modern threats.
