Trump was ‘very tough’ in ‘pursuing America’s strategic interests’
Former Home Affairs Department secretary Michael Pezzullo says Donald Trump was “very tough” in “pursuing America’s strategic interests” in his first presidency.
Mr Pezzullo, in an address on Tuesday, proposed a Defence Production Commission.
“If you look at his [Donald Trump’s] actual performance in his first presidency … he was very tough in terms of pursuing America’s strategic interests in two respects – one of this economic primacy and, secondly, its military primacy,” Mr Pezzullo told Sky News Australia.

“I think the Trump administration … understand that trade follows the flag.
“If the American flag retreats from East Asia, the Western Pacific, and the Indian Ocean, so will American trade.
“Look at the record – they did not retreat from the Pacific, and they did not retreat from American primacy in the Pacific; if anything, they doubled down.”
