ALBAWABA - In a move to bolster NATO's eastern defenses, the U.S. has dispatched its first consignment of tanks and armored vehicles to a newly established storage facility in Powidz, Poland.
The "Stars and Stripes" newspaper reports that the U.S. Army announced the arrival of 14 M1 Abrams tanks and one M88 armored vehicle at the Powidz base via rail. This significant delivery marks the first of many as part of NATO's broader strategy to reinforce its eastern front.
Managed by the 405th Army Field Support Brigade, the Powidz facility is set to become one of NATO's most critical infrastructure developments in over three decades. The base, located approximately 400 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, is expected to be fully operational next year. Once complete, it will store a total of 85 tanks, 190 armored vehicles, 35 artillery pieces, and various munitions.
Colonel Ernest Lane II, commander of the brigade, highlighted the strategic importance of the facility, noting, "Its location provides us with multiple transportation options and diverse shipment methods, significantly enhancing NATO's operational capabilities."
The establishment of these storage facilities aims to dramatically cut down the deployment time for tanks, armored vehicles, and ammunition needed for combat, exercises, or training—from 60 days to less than a week.
