Here's how Dell is preparing for and considering AI
And joining me here from the New York Stock Exchange, we're in the special bond room, is Michael Dell, the founder and CEO of Dell Technologies. Coming off of a a big quarter, a beat and a raise. Michael Dell, it's good to see you. Thank you, Sarah, great to be with you. How transformational is AI for your company right now? You know, I think if you if you step back and you think about what's going on, we're kind of moving from calculating and computing towards cognition. And that's a pretty big change for the industry. You know, we've been doing the calculating thing for about 50 years. And you know, with AI and generative AI, you know, we're basically creating intelligence. And so how big is the market for that? It's pretty big. What do you need to do it? Well, you need data, right? And you need compute, you need memory and storage and networking. These are all the things that we do. So our company was kind of built for this moment. And so it is a great opportunity for us, for sure. I was going to say, you've seen so many technology cycles since you founded this company in 1984. Where does this generative AI revolution sit in terms of just how different it is? It's certainly as as big as any of the other big waves. Is it bigger? It certainly could be. You know, when I think about the Internet, which is, you know, go back to, you know, the mid 1990s, it kind of feels like that, except it's happening maybe 10 times faster because now, you know, 5 billion people kind of instantly have access to AI. And there's so much data and so much computing power that's becoming available that, you know, it's getting used rapidly around the world. And the benefits are significant. That's why you see companies investing heavily to, you know, create this opportunity. So you said your company is built for it. And investors have gotten excited. I mentioned the stock performance. But then last quarter, stocks sold off almost 20% after some questions about profitability. Did the market get it wrong? Well, you mentioned the stock performance, you know, year to date and certainly you know the stock has has been performing well. Generally. You know, I think look, our business is is doing well. You mentioned in the first quarter, you know, we did quite well. Our enterprise business, our ISG business grew 22%. The server and networking portion of the business grew 42%. And you know the demand for AI servers and networking is is tremendous. We're installing, you know, very large clusters with customers around the world. And I think we're really just at the beginning of this demand wave. And if you think back to what our core businesses, one of the big businesses that we're in is data, right? And the amount of data that's being created in the world is not slowing down. Every seven or eight months, the amount of data in the world double S and that numbers probably shrinking. And we store and protect and manage more data than any company in the world. This comes from our EMC acquisition and work that we've been doing at Dell for a long time. Put all that together, this is a tremendous opportunity for us. It's now AI is bringing that data to life.
