British royal family unite for history-making traditional ceremony

The royal family has gathered for the Most Noble Order of the Garter service at St George's Chapel in Windsor, two days after Trooping the Colour.

King Charles and Queen Camilla were joined by the Prince of Wales, Princess Anne and her husband Sir Timothy Laurence, and Prince Edward and wife Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh.

The Princess of Wales did not attend today's events, having joined attending Trooping the Colour on June 15.

The royal family were treated to much better weather for The Order of the Garter events than they were for Trooping the Colour, the annual celebration of the monarch's birthday, which saw heavy rain and winds.

This time, the sun shone as the royals gathered for the occasion.

Prince William attended today's events solo, with the Princess of Wales remaining at home.

The Order of the Garter is the oldest and most senior Order of Chivalry in Britain. It was established by King Edward III approximately 700 years ago.

Queen Camilla was made the Royal Lady of the Most Noble Order of the Garter at the end of 2021.

Garter Day saw Ladies and Knights of the Order of the Garter join a procession down the hill from the Berkshire Castle's State Apartments to St George's Chapel.

Each wore traditional garb including white plumed hats and dark blue velvet robes. Joining the procession was former British prime minster Tony Blair and musician Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.

So too did composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Members of the Household Cavalry Regiment marched ahead of the Order Of The Garter Service.

Also joining the procession, the Duchess of Gloucester, the late Queen Elizabeth's cousin who made history as the first non-blood royal not married to the monarch or heir to be made a Royal Lady of the Garter.

Following the procession the royals travelled back to the castle by carriage.

Prince William joined the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh for the return trip.

Also in attendance, Princess Anne and husband Sir Timothy Laurence.

After the service at St George's Chapel, the royals took part in a carriage procession back up the hill to the castle.

It will continue to be a busy week for the royals with Royal Ascot taking place from June 18 until 22.

The royal family traditionally attends and are regularly pictured mingling with crowds and cheering during races, dressed in their racing finest.
