Actor Jyotika, who recently made her Bollywood comeback with Shaitaan and also did Srikanth, said only when superstars have confidence in themselves, they can give space to their co-stars on screen. In an exclusive chat with Zoom, the 45-year-old got candid about questions she faces as an artiste, being a woman and a mother in real life, and how she and her actor-husband Suriya balance their work for their two kids.
On doing films in different languages and questions around it
It's always there, at every point. Even today after I'm back, many say why are you doing this language and not in this. Why are you not doing this? The truth is I'm doing everything. I'm just picking what's coming to me and what I'm liking. Language is no barrier. So there are always questions, especially after marriage.
On her Bollywood comeback after 27 years, and how she is balacning work and family
My kids were very young when I got back so that was a big question mark. (People asked me) Are you going to leave a three year old back at home? Definitely you can balance the situation. I had my three-year-old on the set also with me. A lot of times, kids have come to set and done homework. A lot of them they've traveled with Suriya. He's stayed back home. So we have this between both of us that one stays back home while the other goes to work. We don't just leave the kids. So I think questions are always there, but I feel everything is possible for a woman to do. She's another name for multitasking.
On picking characters with a motherly instinct at this point in her career
I think more than the motherliness, I look at the strength of the character and then mother definitely comes in where there is strength. My entire focus is on how strong a woman is on screen, whether she's in two scenes or one, or in the entire film. What attracted me in Shaitaan was that she was not the mom who was nudging her husband and saying, 'kuch karo, kuch karo'. She was more like, she went and lashed out at the villain. And that would really happen in a real life situation. No mom's gonna sit back there and wait for anything to happen to her daughter... So, it's the strength in the woman which attracts me to the role, and I felt both Srikanth and Shaitaan had that strength, even if it was matured, underlying in its own way. I felt I saw a lot of the women I knew, in those characters.
On male actors giving space to their co-stars, especially women on screen
I have to give it to Ajay. He gave everybody that space to perform and come in the forefront. I strongly feel we need superstar heroes who actually have that kind of confidence in themselves and let the other actors take their space on screen. I've been lucky to be part of such projects also where the heroes have put us in the forefront and given us that space.
