The Taliban showered appreciation on India after the Afghanistan cricket team created history in the 2024 T20 World Cup by reaching the semi-finals of the mega event. The Rashid Khan-led outfit reached the last four of an ICC tournament for the first time in history.

Just about two decades after becoming an affiliate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC), Afghanistan has become only the 10th team in history to reach the semi-final of a Cricket World Cup (ODI or T20). The South Asian nation's journey has been nothing short of a fairy tale.

It is worth remembering that Indiahas played a huge role in Afghanistan's rise by supporting them on both a financial and infrastructure level. The Taliban acknowledged India's role in Afghanistan's journey and expressed their gratitude for it.

"We are thankful for India’s continuous help in capacity building of the Afghan Cricket Team. We really appreciate that," Taliban's Head of the Political Office, Suhail Shaheen told WION News.

For those unfamiliar, India has been one of the home grounds of the Afghanistan national team, with international cricket not yet possible in the country. Afghanistan has played a few games in the past at the Shahid Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex in Greater Noida, the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Dehradun, and the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

Next month, Afghanistan is reportedly set to host Bangladesh in a three-match ODI and T20I series on Indian soil, with Noida and Kanpur's Green Park Stadium set to host the games.

In 2014, it was a grant of $1 million from the Indian government that allowed the construction of the Kandhar International Cricket Stadium. Over the years, a few Indian companies also sponsered the Afghanistan cricket team.

Afghanistan players are regulars in the IPL, with Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, Noor Ahmed, Mujeeb Ahmed, and Gulbadin Naib among some players to feature in the cash-rich league.

India and Afghanistan could possibly play each other in the final of the T20 World Cup 2024 on Saturday (June 29) in Barbados.
