After a torrid outing in the T20 World Cup 2024, Pakistan cricketers such as the likes of Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi may face cuts in their salaries as per reports. The Pakistan Cricket Board has been planning to review the central contracts of all the squad members after the team's early exit from the marquee tournament.
Pakistan is set to lock horns with Ireland on Sunday but then since they are already eliminated in the group stage, the match will be a dead rubber after the USA made it to the Super 8 stage.
As per PTI, some players and officials gave advice to the PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi to evaluate the central contracts given to the players during his predecessor Zaka Ashraf's tenure.
"There could be a reassessment of the central contracts and the players could find their salaries, and fees being cut if the Chairman decides to react strongly to the team's recent woeful performances,” a reliable source told PTI.
This was the third time in a total of nine editions that the Men in Green failed to grab the spot beyond the group stage of the T20 World Cup. Having won the tournament back in 2009 under the leadership of Younis Khan and also made it to the finals under Shoaib Malik (2007) and Babar Azam (2022).
Talking about the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, Pakistan sustained a super over defeat to the USA in their first Group A match that proved to be a major dent to their Super 8 hopes. In their next do-or-die clash against India, Pakistan could not chase down 120 runs even though being in a commanding position for the most part of their innings.
"Nothing is final as yet but yes this strong measure has been discussed within the board with the Chairman," the source added.
Earlier, Naqvi declared before the World Cup in the USA and West Indies that every player would get a bonus payment of USD 100,000 if they won the tournament.
Former cricketers have been calling for strict measures to be taken against Pakistan players after a torrid and forgettable campaign, and it remains to be seen what the PCB's next move will be.
