Blu Boys stay alive in World Cup

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines showed incredible grit as it shocked host Mexico, 3-1, yesterday to remain in the World Cup hunt in the 18th WBSC Men’s Softball World Cup group stage at the Estadio Mundialistas Hermosillense.

The Cebuana Lhuillier-bankrolled Blu Boys rode on a strong pitching effort of 18-year-old Jehanz Coro, who gave up only three hits, a run and three walks while fanning five Mexican batters in claiming their first win after a pair of heartbreaking defeats.

Those losses came at the hands of Dominican Republic, 2-5, Thursday and reigning world champions Australia, 5-4, Friday.
