A holiday company is offering free mobile data with every booking to help UK travellers avoid extortionate roaming fees.

'On the Beach' customers are eligible for 5GB of free data when they book a trip with the package holiday firm.

It comes after research commissioned by the company revealed that Britons are being charged an average of £58.25 for their overseas holiday phone bill, post Brexit.

An alarming 58 per cent have been stung with a hefty bill after a trip abroad, with some forking out more than £100, according to the study, which asked 2,015 UK holidaymakers how much they were charged for using their phone abroad.

Now, internet lovers can access On the Beach's free data perk by installing a digital eSIM that lets them keep their own mobile number.

Those who book a one-to-four-night stay get 500MB of data, those on a five-to-six-night stay will receive 3GB and for those on a seven-night stay, it's 5GB.

The free data is given to the lead booker and can be shared with others by hotspotting. There are no limitations on how it's used, from sharing holiday snaps to streaming, and the perk is available on repeat bookings.

Zoe Harris, chief customer officer at On the Beach, said: 'Whether it’s posting those holiday snaps to social media, getting help translating the local food menus or getting directions to the beach, you can use our free mobile data as you please.

'Just don’t check your work emails, for your own sake.'

Research by On the Beach suggests that the average Briton uses 3.9GB of data per week, meaning customers will have 'plenty of free data', it says.

However, major internet aficionados who fear the free bundle will not be enough might find a better deal by shopping around.

EE offers 50GB charged at £2 per day or £10 per month, according to Which?. Three offers 12GB for £2 a day in the EU or £5 per day worldwide, while Vodafone allows 25GB from £1 to £6 per day, depending on the package and location, the watchdog adds.

Other sites where British holidaymakers might find a good deal are Voxi and moneysavingexpert.com, as reported by the Mail on Sunday's Holiday Guru.

The On the Beach study was conducted between February 29 and March 1, 2024, and was conducted by Censuswide, with UK phone contract holders.
