A 'toxic' man has been slammed online after he appeared to bombard his wife with their children moments before she crossed a half-marathon finish line.

Footage captured by a Brazilian journalist shows the moment a man encouraged two young girls to greet a racer during the competition in Presidente Prudente, São Paulo.

The TikTok, which has amassed over 8m views, opens with the woman approaching the finishing line within 100 minutes of starting the 13 mile race.

The man - who is thought to be the woman's husband - then leads the girls onto the track, presuming that she will be happy to finish the race with them by her side.

However, the mother instead decides to run around the children to get to the finish line as quickly as possible.

After crossing the line, the mother - who was dressed in all-black and wearing sunglasses - screams with excitement over her achievement.

In the background, the husband appears confused by how the race brushed off their children and is seen shrugging at someone off-camera.

The viral clip ends with the mother hugging a male racer who finished the half-marathon just moments after her.

The video was then shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, by an unimpressed viewer who took issue with the husband's behaviour.

She fumed: 'I don't have the words to describe how much I hate this husband. Let her have one thing without mum guilt.'

One critic responded: 'Look at him signalling to the other spectators - "that was weird huh?" No, YOU'RE weird taking the kids way before the finish line and not after it.'

The X user then replied: 'Exactly. It was totally deliberate that he did it there rather than after the finish line so that she’d have to run past her kids who were being encouraged to go up and cuddle her.'

One replied: 'I've run seven marathons. The best my family is getting from me is a wave. I'm not stopping right before the finish.'

Another joked: 'Ready kids? Let's RUIN mommy's time on this race that she's trained MONTHS for!'

While a third labelled him 'toxic', a fourth argued: 'He tried to sabotage her performance. Has he never been to a competition before?'

Meanwhile, others couldn't understand why the racer's family didn't meet her when she had finished.

Another added: 'Why would he wait there with the kids? Literally just wait past the finish line.'

'Finish lines can be dangerous, especially if multiple people are vying for a personal best,' a third said. 'Absolutely NOT a safe place to put little kids because other runners can run over them.

'We can’t stop on the dime. He should know how much training she’s done and how important this is to her.'

A fourth said: 'Why wouldn’t he set the kids up AFTER the finish line?? They should be there to CONGRATULATE her on her moment.. not make the moment about them.'

However, others jumped to the man's defence and said he wasn't trying to take attention away from the racer.

One supporter said: 'On the fence on this. Dad could just be clueless but to say he doesn't support his wife (if that is his wife, they could be siblings) is a stretch.

'This kind of training takes a lot of time and sacrifice which he would have had to support.'

'She looks perfectly fine with her kids being there,' another added. 'STOP judging through your own paradigm.'
