Joachim Andersen unleashed a furious rant at VAR after two controversial decisions went against Denmark in their 2-0 defeat by Germany at Euro 2024.

The tournament hosts booked their spot in the quarter-finals after second-half goals from Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala - but the technology stole the headlines after ruling out Andersen's strike and later penalising him for handball inside the box.

The defender looked to have touched the underdogs in front shortly after the restart, only for his effort to be chalked off with Thomas Delaney caught offside. Replays from the semi-automated offside system revealed he had strayed by a tiny fraction.

Just minutes later, Andersen conceded a penalty after David Raum's cross touched his arm. Referee Michael Oliver had initially waved away the appeals but later pointed to the spot after being advised to review the incident on his monitor.

Havertz then stepped up to beat goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel from 12 yards.

Speaking post-match, Andersen vented his anger at the two divisive incidents.

'It was crazy and not a penalty at all. I can't run around with my arms behind my back and play football,' the centre back told TV2.

'He's [Raum] half a metre away from me and hits the ball on my hand, so I can't see what I could do to prevent it.'

On his disallowed goal, he added: 'The offside call is also difficult to see. It's so minimal that you really have to look for it.

'But the handball call is the craziest I've ever seen. Margins decided the game. If our goal had been allowed, I'm convinced we would have won the game.'

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou echoed Andersen's thoughts on punditry duties for ITV, insisting that VAR holds too much influence during matches.

'If I hear one more person say, they're [VAR] not re-refereeing the game, I will blow up,' said Postecoglou, a vocal critic of the technology.

'Seriously, that is exactly what they do. That is not why we brought in technology, for that decision, that decision to me is quite an easy one.'

An irritated Schmeichel, meanwhile, admitted he does not understand the game's handball laws.

'This is football nowadays,' he told ITV. 'I've played professionally now for 23 years and I still don't know the rules yet.'
