A dad who died in Magaluf on holiday with his friends and family was found covered in bite marks may have been the victim of a hit and run.

Michael Grant was found unresponsive in the resort’s Martin Ros Street near the Punta Ballena strip at around 4.30am today.

A coroner said he had leg injuries consistent with having been hit by a car, a deep wound with glass inside as well as bite marks on his arm and shoulder.

Tributes have since poured in for the 45-year-old, who was a popular youth football coach in Waterford, Munster.

He was on holiday with his wife Leanne and two of their children along with other families from Ireland.

A security guard who raised the alarm told investigating Spanish police he had seen the man collapse and fall to the ground in Majorca, one of Spain’s Balearic Islands.

Despite attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are now scouring CCTV footage in the area to try and find the driver of the car who hit him.

‘Michael died suddenly whilst on holidays with family and friends,’ a notice issued on RIP.ie read.

He reportedly took a wrong turn and became separated from other members of his group after spending the afternoon drinking by the hotel pool.

St Joseph’s AFC Waterford, where Michael was a coach, also issued a heartfelt tribute.

The club said: ‘It is with a heavy heart that we inform you of the sudden shock passing of our dearest club member and head child coach, Michael Grant.

‘As many of you know, Michael was more than just a coach to us – he was a beloved friend and as a club and for his family we need time to process this devastating loss.

‘Michael was an integral part of our community, and his absence will be profoundly felt.

‘He was not just a coach but a mentor and a friend to all the children and adult members at St Joseph’s.’

St Joseph’s AFC said Michael’s dedication, passion, and love for the kids was ‘evident in everything he did’.

Initial reports said the man who died was a UK national after the local authority identified him as such.

But the Civil Guard leading the investigation have since revealed he was travelling on an Irish passport.

Police informed his family after tracking them down to where they were staying by retrieving his name from a hotel wristband he was wearing at the time.

An autopsy was due to be carried out today.

The Civil Guard has been gathering CCTV footage in the area where he died as they investigate the death.

Neither them nor local police on the Mediterranean island have made an official comment.

However, a spokesman for Calvia Council, the local authority responsible for Magaluf, said: ‘A 45-year-old man died in the street this morning in the Magaluf area.

‘It occurred around 4.30am. The dead man was staying in a hotel in the area.’

They added: ‘An employee of a local establishment alerted police, saying that a man was unwell and was stumbling around in the street.

‘Local police arrived and performed CPR but were unable to revive him. The Civil Guard has taken over the investigation to determine the cause of death.’
