Brazilian fighter Mayra Bueno SIlva suffered one of the worst cuts in UFC history on Saturday night.

In the second round of her UFC 303 contest against Macy Chiasson, Silva was dealt a slicing elbow while her opponent was on top of her on the ground.

It was immediately clear how serious the wound was when it started pouring with blood but took the referee a while to intervene.

He stopped the action in the second round for the doctor to come into thee octagon and assess the damage.

Silva's cut ran all the way along her eyebrow line and was hanging open, reportedly deep enough to go down to the bone.

Sensibly, the fight was then stopped and judged to be  TKO victory for Chiasson, despite the fact that Silva wanted to carry on.

Had she been hit with another blow to the wound, it would have been much worse and perhaps she'll reflect in time that getting immediate medical attention was the right thing.

It was a bitter ending for the 33-year-old, who had enjoyed the better of the opening round, landing heavy shots and working ferociously against her bantamweight opponent.

But the elbow proved to be her undoing and there was a slight disagreement in the commentary box about whether the fight should continue.

Joe Rogan suggested if the fighter wants to carry on they should be allowed, while Daniel Cormier, former two weight UFC champion joked that his broadcast partner 'just loves violence'.

The aftercare fighters receive is known to be of a top standard and Silva will have been stitched up rapidly after being whisked away, though it will take months of recovery time before she can spar again.
