Braves shuffle roster ahead of Giants, Phillies series
The Braves are gearing up for a pair of critical series this week, one against the Giants and a 4th of July set against the Phillies, and they’ll be getting a notable reinforcement in the form of A.J. Minter.
The team announced on Sunday that Daysbel Hernandez would be optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett and announced on Monday that Minter would be reinstated from the injured list.
Hernandez’s time in Atlanta isn’t over by any means. Over nine appearances this season, he’s yet to allow an earned run in 9.2 innings, recording a 32.4% strikeout rate to only three walks.
However, Daysbel Hernandez was one of two relievers, Dylan Lee being the other, that had options, so the Braves will likely be seeing Hernandez at some point later in the season.
As for Minter, the Braves’ setup man hasn’t appeared in a game since the end of May, when he was placed on the IL due to inflammation in his hip. After about three weeks on the shelf, Minter made a rehab appearance on June 22. Minter returns after appearing in 25 games, logging a 2.95 ERA but a 4.89 FIP over 21.1 innings.
The Braves currently sit 8.0 games behind the first-place Phillies in the NL East, so this is a big week for Atlanta. If they can take the series from the Giants and then the Phillies, they’ll make up considerable ground in the division. A.J. Minter will help in that effort.
