Stengle stays: Geelong secure crafty forward for next five years

Premiership forward Tyson Stengle has decided to remain at Geelong for the next five years, declining St Kilda’s attempt to lure him as an unrestricted free agent.

Stengle has been an exceptional performer at the Cats since he revived his career in 2022 after stints at Richmond and Adelaide.

Tyson Stengle was in the goals for Geelong on saturday night against Essendon.

The 25-year-old kicked 53 goals and was named All-Australian, helping Geelong to a flag in 2022 with four goals in the grand final.

It was a remarkable return from the talented goalkicker who Adelaide delisted after a series of off-field incidents. However, with the support of his junior club, Woodville West-Torrens, he was able to demonstrate his commitment to resurrecting his career, and he joined Geelong, where his friend Eddie Betts was an assistant coach.

While he has received support at Geelong, Cats’ teammates have always emphasised that it has been Stengle who is responsible for turning around his career.

Two industry sources familiar with the details of the deal said Stengle would remain a Cats player until the end of 2029. He has kicked 31 goals this season and at least one goal in every game since round one, having now kicked 111 goals in 59 matches for Geelong.

The signature is a strong show of faith in the Cats and reveals the connection 25-year-old Stengle has to the club, as he would have received more money if he had gone elsewhere.

He joins Max Holmes and Sam De Koning as key signatures football manager Andrew Mackie has locked in at the Cats, who rebounded with a win against Essendon on Saturday night.

However, the Cats still have big decisions to make in the back end of the season about the futures of veterans Rhys Stanley, the injured Tom Hawkins, Patrick Dangerfield, Zach Tuohy and Mitch Duncan.

Free agent Jack Henry is expected to stay at the club.
