A boxing match descended into chaos when one of the fighters sucker punched the referee, who responded with a shot of his own.

Angel Cruz squared off against Julio De Jesus in promotion Shaun Boxing's latest fight night in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on Friday night.

Cruz landed a superb right hand to drop his opponent to the canvas and instantly wheeled away in celebration.

De Jesus managed to get back to his feet almost immediately but the referee waved the fight off to condemn De Jesus to a seventh consecutive defeat.

De Jesus was unsurprisingly unhappy with the decision and made his feelings known before retreating into his corner.

Moments later, he astoundingly crept up behind the referee and sucker punched him across the face.

The referee was taken back by what had just happened before seeing red.

He made his way across the ring and launched a punch of his own at De Jesus , though it was blocked by a member of the latter's team.

Cruz, who won the fight, acted as a peacemaker as he pulled away the referee, who exited the ring straight after.

It is not known whether the pair will face a punsihment, especially De Jesus as he initiated the incident.

The victory saw Cruz extend his record to 11-1, while 42-year-old De Jesus is now 27-8.

A Croatian boxer was handed a permanent suspension from boxing in 2014 after brutally attacking a referee at a European Youth Boxing Championship event.
