While scouring the internet for inspiration for my next baking endeavor, I found a three-year-old Reddit post that instantly caught my attention: a beautifully formed whipping cream cake. I immediately took note of its gorgeous shade of golden brown and perfectly crisp edges.

The post has over 3,000 upvotes and hundreds of comments—clearly, it's very popular! Years later, Redditors today are still posting their versions of the whipping cream cake.

The recipe, shared to the r/Old_Recipes subreddit, calls for what seems like a shocking amount of sugar, though commenters say it aids in the cake's ability to produce a perfectly caramelized edge. I’m not one to shy away from a sugary treat, so I decided to dive right in and see what the hype is all about, and I'm so glad I did.

How To Make Reddit’s Whipping Cream Cake

You'll need:

  • 2 sticks butter (salted or unsalted) at room temperature
  • 3 cups granulated sugar
  • 6 eggs
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 pint (1 cup) heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla extract

Combine the butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl and beat with a large whisk until light and fluffy. Add one egg at a time, beating until fully combined after each addition.

Alternately add half of the flour and whipping cream, beating after each addition until everything is combined. Be careful not to whip the whipping cream. Stir in the vanilla extract. Try not to overmix the batter.

Scrape the batter into a 10-cup bundt pan—for insurance, grease and flour the pan.

Place the pan on the center rack of a cold oven and set the temperature to 325°F. Bake for one hour 15 minutes, testing for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the thickest part of the cake. When the toothpick slides out easily, and no wet bits remain on it, the cake is done.

Allow it to cool for 20 minutes before removing it from the pan. Then, let it cool completely on a wire rack before serving. Dust with powdered sugar, and enjoy!

The Verdict

The sweetness, combined with the deliciously crisp edges and soft, moist bite, sent me to the moon and back. I found myself returning for second and third helpings.

Truthfully, this cake is pretty darn sweet in every sense of the word. If your palate is sensitive to overly sweet treats, you might need to eat this cake in small doses. I would highly recommend that you try this retro recipe.

3 Tips for Making Reddit’s Retro Whipping Cake

  1. The author of the recipe urges readers not to whip the heavy whipping cream, which means that this recipe is best made by hand rather than an electric mixer. You just need the heavy whipping cream and the flour to be smoothly incorporated together with no clumps.
  2. Start the cake in a cold oven. Do not preheat your oven. This gives the cake time to fully bake through without the edges burning. Simply place the cake on the center rack and then set the temperature to 325°F and let the oven do the rest of the work.
  3. If you’ve struggled with getting the cake to fall cleanly out of the bundt pan, the trick is to grease that sucker up well. Any cooking spray or oil will work, however, in response to a comment left by a Redditor who had this same problem, the author offered up a very helpful solution: “I used a paste made from equal parts oil/flour/shortening that I whipped and then brushed into the pan. After a 15-minute cooldown, [the cake] popped right out when flipped.”
