I spent 3 nights on overnight trains in Europe
Hi, I'm Heather Sacks, traveler with by the way. I'm about to embark on a three night train journey in Europe. Every evening I will board a train in one city and I will wake up. And not just a new city, but an entirely different country. Earlier this month I decided to try out the newest generation of overnight trains. I spent my first night on a European sleeper train that left Amsterdam at 10:30 PM and arrived in Berlin around 630. AMI shared a couchette with two other women who fell fast asleep. It took me a little longer to settle down, so I hung out in the bike storage area. One of the downsides is that there's no cafe, car or communal space where you can hang out when you're not sleepy. For my second night, I travel from Berlin to Zurich on Night jet. My sleeper cabin was swanky. I had my own sink, mood lighting and bag of overnight goodies that included slippers, earplugs and an eye mask. The cabin attendant popped by to take my breakfast order and gave me a small bottle of German wine, which I drank. The passengers in my car had to share the shower. I accidentally broke the stall door and the water ran out, but at least I was clean. I spent my final night with three other women in the night jet train to Budapest. I woke up with feet dangling in my face. My cabin companion, who was from Budapest, suggested I visit the thermal baths near Heroes Square. Since my train did not have a shower, this was the perfect recommendation. After my three nights, I was hooked on overnight trains. I would definitely sleep my way through Europe, but I might bring some baby wipes next time.
