The world's No 1 women's golfer, Nelly Korda, has withdrawn from next week's Aramco Team Series event after revealing a freak injury.

Korda announced in a statement Friday morning she was bitten by a dog last weekend while in Seattle for the Women's PGA Championship.

The 25-year-old missed the cut at the tournament - her second straight at a major event and third consecutive tournament.

The Olympic Gold medalist most recent round was a nine-over-par 81 at the LPGA Championship last Friday, which saw her fail to make it to the weekend once again amid her recent slump in form.

It was during that round camera crews witnessed Korda wiping tears away from her eyes in a heartbreaking moment.

Korda was set to look to bounce back away from the LPGA with a trip across the pond for the Aramco Series event at Centurion Club outside of London next weekend.

However, her freak injury forced her to withdraw from the tournament - the third of five on the circuit - with less than a week to go.

'I regret to announce that I must withdraw from next weeks Ladies European Tour tournament in London,' Korda said on Instagram. 'On Saturday in Seattle, I was bitten by a dog and need time to receive treatment and recover fully.'

'I apologize to the LET, the sponsors, and my fans for my absence,' Korda continued. 'Thank you for your understanding, and I look forward to returning to the course soon.'

Korda was on a hot streak earlier this year, winning five straight events from the end of January through mid-April.

After a seventh-place finish at the Cognizant Founders Cup, Korda was back to her winning ways at the Mizuho Americas Open.

Since her mid-May win in New Jersey, Korda has played in three tournaments and missed the cut in each of them. Her opening round at the U.S. Women's Open last month was a 10-over-par 80.

Korda still has a sizable lead over the world's No 2 golfer Lilia Vu, who is more than 158 points behind the 25-year-old American in the Rolex rankings.

Korda's return to the sport may be at one of the LPGA's five majors, the Evian Championship, taking place July 11-14 in France.

Korda's mainstream status has only grown during her hot streak, as she became the first LPGA player to attend the infamous Met Gala last month.

The golfer wore a dress from famous fashion house, Oscar de la Renta, choosing a nude mesh, strapless dress embroidered in red applique poppies for 'The Garden of Time' theme.
