Why the White Sox should trade Garrett Crochet this summer

There are not many positives to take away from the Chicago White Sox’s season up until this point. They have the worst record in MLB, 21-61, and are ways away from competing for the playoffs. However, Garrett Crochet, the diamond in the rough, has been an elite pitcher so far this season. Having transitioned to a starter for the first time since his days at Tennessee, he has pitched to a 3.05 ERA, a 0.94 WHIP and an American League-leading 130 strikeouts in 17 games.
Crochet, 25, has two more years until he is set to become an unrestricted free agent. He more than likely will not be a part of the White Sox’s rebuild, as that timeline projects a little farther out. With the potential and value he has shown on the field, as well as his favorable contract, Crochet is an ideal candidate for the Sox to sell. He could not possibly become more valuable in the near future.
According to MLB.com, the White Sox have the 20th-ranked farm system, with only two players ranked within the top 100 (Colson Montgomery at No. 9 and Noah Schultz at No. 50). Trading Crochet could bring in several more top-tier prospects or young, MLB-ready talent, rejuvenating their pipeline and offering more long-term security. Teams with playoff aspirations are often willing to part with high-caliber prospects for a player like Crochet, who could immediately bolster their bullpen or rotation.
Teams that fit this criteria include the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Guardians and Baltimore Orioles.
Another reason now is the time for the White Sox to act is Crochet's injury history. He missed the entire 2023 season due to Tommy John surgery, and while he has returned to action, the specter of future injuries lingers. Pitchers with Crochet’s profile — high velocity and high-stress deliveries — are particularly prone to arm injuries.
By trading him now, the White Sox could avoid the potential scenario in which another injury diminishes his value or sidelines him for an extended period. Let other teams take that risk while they are in win-now mode and need a power arm to complete their pitching staff.
By capitalizing on Crochet’s current value, the White Sox can ensure they receive maximum return.
