Twisters Tracking to Blow Away Box Office Competition
Twisters is about to blow away the competition at the box office. The standalone sequel to 1996's Twister is currently on track for a stellar opening weekend.
Per Deadline, Twisters is tracking towards a $50 million domestic start at the box office. However, Deadline noted that "walk-up business and a heat wave is driving everything higher than where tracking is seeing it," meaning that Twisters could end up coming in above $50 million. With no other major releases set for the July 19 weekend, Twisters should have no trouble securing the top spot at the box office.

Daisy Edgar-Jones, anthony Ramos and Glen Powell dodging a tornado in Twisters
The original Twister earned $41 million in its opening weekend back in May 1996. The Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton-led disaster movie ultimately grossed over $495 million at the global office. With a budget of $200 million, Universal will be hoping that Twisters earns at least that at the box office. Working in Twisters' favor is that it will be the first big-budgeted movie to hit theaters in weeks, releasing more than two weeks after Despicable Me 4 (another Universal movie). However, with Deadpool & Wolverine set to open the following weekend, there's a chance the Marvel threequel could steal some of Twisters' thunder heading into August.
While Twisters features none of the cast of Twister, Glen Powell — who stars in the sequel as storm-chasing social media star Tyler Owens — recently shared that Twisters will be "a rowdy good time, just like the original." He also shared that the movie will explore similar themes of loss and reconciliation, revealing that "this movie is about re-inspiring love in the same way. [It's about] what we chase, and what we run from."
Who Is Twisters About?
In Twisters, haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado, meteorologist Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones) gets lured back into tornado-chasing by her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. They soon cross paths with Powell's Tyler, who has a less traditional approach to chasing storms. When multiple life-threatening systems converge over central Oklahoma, Tyler, Kate and Javi put aside competitiveness to save themselves and civilians from impending doom.

Glen Powell Hypes Twisters' Action Sequences
The first Twister was praised by critics and audiences for its visceral thrills and special effects, something that Powell recently shared will also be present in Twisters. The actor told Fandango at the start of June that Twisters features "one of the most incredible action sequences of all time." He explained that the storm sequence seen in Twisters "all happens in a oner," a slang term used in filmmaking to refer to a shot that was typically filmed in one unbroken take. "We shot that in December, with a rain machine," Powell added. "One of the coldest nights I’ve ever experienced, getting dragged across a pool by a wire. I think it was the most physical thing that I’ve ever done."
Directed by Lee Isaac Chung from a screenplay by Mark L. Smith, Twisters hits theaters on July 19.
