Harvard dropouts raise millions to challenge chipmaker Nvidia
A-Team of Harvard dropouts has raised $120 million to build a new AI chip to challenge NVIDIA. Now, there's a lofty goal. One of those dropouts is Gavin Alberti, who joins me now. Gavin, you're actually going to try to make a chip to compete with an NVIDIA chip, is that correct? Yes, that's correct. What's going to be different about your chip? We are building a very specialized product. It's shipped like NVIDIA makes can run many different kinds of AI models, like the recommendation algorithms that power Twitter. Or the filters that run on Snapchat? Are chips different? It only does one very specific thing. And that has run the models that power AI is like ChatGPT. Does that make it perform better? It does that for a model like Llama, which is Facebook version of Jack, GPT will be able to give 500,000 words per second. You go to 120 million. That's to start the manufacturing process, Yes. Where are you doing it? We're doing it with TSMC on their state-of-the-art 4 nanometer node. That's in Taiwan, right? Yes, that's in Taiwan. When you're going to bring it here? Well, they have the Arizona plant coming up in Arizona, but that's not quite ready yet. But I do hope to move manufacturing to the US once that is more mature. How? Forgive me for asking. You're 22. Yes. You dropped out of Harvard two years ago. You got it. So you spent the last two years figuring out how to make a chip to compete with NVIDIA. Well, we do one very specialized thing, but we do it darn well. OK, I'm going to leave it right there. Gavin Uberty, thank you very much for joining us. That was fascinating. You can come back anytime you like, young men. It's a pleasure being on the show. Yeah, it is. You're an inspiration to see you later. Alright. Thanks very much indeed to you. Thanks so much to you, Jason Chaffetz. You're fine today.
