Five Newcastle stars at risk of being sold in scramble to raise cash this summer

Newcastle are scrambling to raise cash before the end of June to stay within the Premier League’s financial limits.

Older assets like Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron - who is currently away playing for Paraguay - are proving hard to offload so early in the window. The most interesting deals being done in June have involved young players - making several young Newcastle stars vulnerable to being sold before they reach their potential on Tyneside.

Yankuba Minteh is Newcastle’s No1 choice to offload and raise up to £40million but a deal with Everton stalled over the price - even though the player wants to go to Merseyside rather than abroad.

Eddie Howe and club chief Amanda Staveley face a tough weekend looking for a sale, while rivals could plunder United’s top young talent. Newcastle have lost good young players for decades. Paul Gascoigne quit for Spurs in the 1980s, Chris Waddle, Peter Beardsley and others went elsewhere to make their names. More recently Ivan Toney was on the books and grew into an England star after moving away from Tyneside.

Young, home grown assets represent pure profit in football accounting procedure so selling someone who has come through the academy is huge… but really is often the opposite of what fans want to see happen. So, who could go?

Yankuba Minteh

Given he has yet to kick a ball for the first team, it is a shock he is the centre of transfer attention. Caught the eye on loan scoring for Feyenoord last season, 13 in all for club and his country Gambia.

Was only signed last summer from Odense for £6m and a sale would solve the Geordies’ financial worries ahead of the June 30 accounts health check.

There’s interest from the continent, including Lyon, but the player wants to prove himself at Premier League level and is holding out for that deal, unless his hand is forced.

Can Everton revive their proposed deal and get Newcastle to drop the £40m price?

Elliot Anderson

Whitley Bay lad is now 21 and has made 16 starts and 39 appearances off the bench in black and white, but is yet to score a goal, and conclusively prove he is the future.

Fans are desperate for a home grown attacker, but Anderson has found himself linked with a move to Wolves this summer as a makeweight in a bigger deal.

Anderson has big potential. He’s good in tight situations on the half turn in attack. But a back injury wrecked last season, and he covered a more defensive role on the left of a midfield three at the end of the campaign, unable to shine. Often team-mates fail to give him the ball in tight situations where he can make a difference.

Anderson faces tough competition on the left from Joelinton, Joe Willock, and further up top Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes. With Newcastle confined to domestic competition next term, will he get a chance if Eddie Howe can field a fresh first XI?

He would be a huge asset for an ambitious Premier League club who will give him a chance. He’d rather extend his contract and stick around.

Sean Longstaff

Eddie Howe has to decide if Geordie Longstaff is the future or whether they can afford to sell him at a big PSR profit.

The midfielder offers hard running legs and is a big part of the Toon’s pressing game and last season got among the goals by netting eight times.

Howe likes to have Geordies in his squad to keep teammates understanding the mood of the town. Like other locals before him Longstaff is judged by harsh standards by the home crowd at times, and may seek a fresh challenge elsewhere at some points with the MLS, where his brother Matty plays, a mooted destination.

But Longstaff still has plenty to offer, and experience of almost 150 games in the league, and it would be a shock move to off load him now.

Lewis Miley

A breakthrough for the teenage midfielder who only turned 18 in May. He made 26 appearances and got rave reviews when he burst onto the scene last summer, first impressing in the pre season USA tour, then making goals and looking natural at the top level. He made the most of a surprise call up after Sandro Tonali was banned and the Toon suffered an injury crisis.

Injury disrupted his season in March, and he looked tired and in need of a break, but clearly has huge potential.

He is long limbed and has growing, and filling out, to do, and no one can work out what Miley will end up being. Will be emerge as a midfield enforcer? Will he be quick enough given his loping running style. I think some sprint technique training would help.

United could cash in now, but a loan away is more likely with Tonali back, Bruno Guimaraes probably staying, Longstaff fit.

Alex Murphy

The talented defender was on the fringes last season and has ability. He made two sub appearances in his debut season after signing from Gallway last summer. He almost joined a Portuguese club on loan last summer and a similar deal could benefit him this summer if Newcastle sign defenders to cover for Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman who are injured until October.
