Bakery Behind One of New York’s Top Croissants Has a New Location

Nicholas Heavican makes one of the city’s best croissants: It’s caramel-colored and shaped like a gibbous moon with an unmistakable smell — butter. Since 2018, when Heavican opened Nick and Sons Bakery in Williamsburg, customers have waited for his pastries in lines that snake down the block. They were so popular that in 2021, he opened another location in Spring Lake, New Jersey.

Now, a third Nick and Sons has appeared. On Tuesday, Heavican opened at 892 Lorimer Street, across from McCarren Park in Greenpoint. The bakery sells several croissants in — almond, za’atar, and everything seasoning — plus cardamom buns, fruit tarts, and other baked goods. By the end of the week, there will be margherita and soppressata pizzas, too. Opening hours are 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday to Sunday.

A pop-up from an acclaimed London restaurant...

One of London’s most acclaimed restaurants is coming to Brooklyn for a night. Fergus Henderson’s St. John, the nose-to-tail restaurant open since 1994, is taking over the kitchen at the Ace Hotel in Downtown Brooklyn. Tickets cost an eye-popping $300 per person, which includes duck heart skewers, roast pig’s cheeks, bone marrow salad, and more. St. John co-founder Trevor Gulliver will be in the kitchen with several chefs flown in for the event.

...and a comeback from Gjelina

Remember Gjelina? We can’t blame you if you don’t. The Los Angeles restaurant was open in Noho for less than a month when a fire forced it to close. Flash forward over a year, and Gjelina is still “coming soon.” While construction is underway, the restaurant is operating out of a studio in the Financial District, Tuesday to Saturday, from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Reservations are available on SevenRooms.

Brekkie in Brooklyn?

Manhattan’s popular cafe chain Ruby’s is eyeing a Brooklyn location. Earlier this month, the restaurant applied for a liquor license application at 98 Berry Street and North Eighth Street in Williamsburg, according to Greenpointers. Ruby’s is one of several Manhattan restaurants to expand to north Brooklyn in recent years — there’s also Upside Pizza, Málà Project, and Caffe Panna, which opens in Greenpoint next month.
