In talks with Centre to increase strength of judiciary: Chief Justice of India
Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has said that the judiciary is in talks with the Centre to increase the number of judges in the country across all formats, including the Supreme Court, high courts, and district courts.
In a Q&A session organised by the Oxford Union earlier this month, the CJI highlighted that the ratio of judges in India to the population of the country is "among the lowest in the world".
Talking about the issue of case pendency, CJI Chandrachud said that the underlying cause was the lack of a sufficient number of judges.
"Judge to population ratio in India is among the lowest in the world. We simply need more judges. We are engaging with the government to increase the strength of the judiciary at all levels,"he said.
The Chief Justice further stated that efforts are being made to ensure vacancies are filled up expeditiously.
Currently, the Supreme Court has a sanctioned strength of 34 judges. Also, an increase in the strength would require a constitutional amendment.
CJI Chandrachud will retire in November, and will be succeeded by Justice Sanjiv Khanna. The new Chief Justice of India's tenure will be from November 11, 2024 to May 13, 2025.
