Side of Minnesota's Rapidan Dam eroded by raging floodwaters
This just into our newsroom. We have new footage this morning of the Rapidan Dam just South of Mankato. Take a look at this. We just got this footage in this morning from our chopper over the Rapidan Dam just South of Mankato. Floodwaters have been washing out the area around that dam for days now. The White House that was on the edge of the Blue Earth River is now completely gone. As you can see, that store, that White House that you see now is the store that was behind that White House. The family that lived there owned the home for 50 years, and they also own that store. It's called the Damn Store. And it's still standing, but as you can see, getting dangerously close to the river edge as the water erodes the sides. You can see here gardens, it looks like just falling into the river as the water is eroding that sandstone along the river there in the Rapidan Dan area. And we've got new drone footage this morning, too, showing the moment that house went under the Blue Earth River. Take a look at this. You can see here, this is from yesterday, earlier in the day, the river making its way around the dam, completely eroding that ground beneath that house. It didn't take long for that erosion to do its damage. There's going to be a flash of white. You can see it right there. We'll play it again here. There's a flash and you can see in the sunset from last night the house falling into the water. It's very quick right there. Wow, you, I mean, that is an incredible footage, but Oh my gosh, that's scary to see. And you can see now the other half of that house there that is gone this morning. And this dam remains an imminent failure condition, according to county officials. But the threat of a complete breach has now diminished. If there is a full collapse of the dam, county leaders say the river could rise another two feet or so. There is a levee assisting system protecting the city and officials are confident. Will hold up.
